Structure of a myofiber (muscle cell)
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: The sarcoplasmicreticul um (SR) is a network of specialized endoplasmic reticulum tubules that surrounds the myofibrils within the myofiber. In resting muscle, the SR accumulates Ca+2, which it discharges into the myofibrils when a neural signal reaches the plasma membrane. The transverse tubules (T system) are invaginations of the plasma membrane that make contact with the SR at many points, ensuring uniform response to the signal.
