Description: (a) Isolated microtubule doublets can “walk” past one another by making and breaking dynein arm contacts, if ATP is present. (b) The back-and-forth bending of a cilium or flagellum is produced by synchronized short “walks” by microtubules on opposite sides of the appendage. Long walks are prevented by the cross-connections between microtubules.
