Description: Phenol is the simplest of the phenolic compounds, though free phenol is not significantly accumulated in living organisms. However, more complex molecules that are derived from phenol are made in cells. Such phenolic compounds are synthesized by using the side groups of the amino acids phenylalanine (which has a benzene ring) or tyrosine (which has a phenol ring). Common categories of phenolics are the flavonoids, tannins, and lignins. The tannins and lignins are large polymeric molecules composed of many phenolic units.
