Description: These molecules have two chiral carbons and thus have two diastereomeric forms, threose and erythrose, each with a pair of enantiomers. When monosaccharides contain more than one chiral carbon, the prefix D or L designates the configuration about the carbon farthest from the carbonyl group. Isomers differing in orientation about other carbons are called diastereomers and given different names.
