Gramicidin A

Gramicidin A
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: Gramicidin A is an antibiotic that acts as an ion pore.

Two molecules of gramicidin A form a pore through the membrane by adopting a helical conformation, with their hydrophobic side chains in contact with the lipid.

Note the N-termini are inside and the C-termini are outside the bilayer core.

The inside of the helix forms the hydrophilic pore.

The hydrogen bonding in this open helical structure resembles that in b-sheet polypeptides.

This is possible because of the alternating D and L residues.
