Description: Fructose-1,6-bisphosphate aldolase, catalyzes the “splitting of sugar” that is connoted by the term glycolysis. The six-carbon sugar fructose-1,6-bisphosphate is cleaved to give 2 three-carbon intermediates, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate and dihydroxyacetone phosphate (DHAP). Aldolase cleaves fructose-1,6-bisphosphate under intracellular conditions, even though the equilibrium lies far toward fructose-1,6-bisphosphate under standard conditions.
