Three-carbon acyl-CoA

Three-carbon acyl-CoA
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: In all organisms a three-carbon acyl-CoA, propionyl-CoA, is generated either from the breakdown of some amino acids or from the oxidation of fatty acids with odd numbers of carbon atoms.

Propionyl-CoA enters gluconeogenesis via its conversion to succinyl-CoA and then to oxaloacetate.

The process involves a coenzyme derived from vitamin B12.
