Description: Louis Pasteur observed that when anaerobic yeast cultures metabolizing glucose were exposed to air, the rate of glucose utilization decreased dramatically. It became clear that this phenomenon, known as the Pasteur effect, involves the inhibition of glycolysis by oxygen. This effect makes biological sense because far more energy is derived from complete oxidation of glucose than from glycolysis alone.
