Lipid peroxidation

Lipid peroxidation
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: Superoxide per se is relatively nontoxic.

Because it contains an unpaired electron, it is a free radical, and it combines readily with another free radical, nitric oxide, a biological signaling agent that is produced in many animal tissues.

The product is peroxynitrite also considered a reactive oxygen species.

Peroxynitrite causes lipid peroxidation and also causes nitration of tyrosyl hydroxyl groups in proteins, a reaction particularly damaging to membrane proteins.
