Previous Image | Next Image
Description: Cholesterol esters are synthesized in plasma from cholesterol and an acyl chain on phosphatidylcholine (lecithin), through the action of lecithin:cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT), an enzyme that is secreted from liver into the bloodstream, bound to HDL and LDL.

Cholesterol esters are considerably more hydrophobic than cholesterol itself.
