Description: An enzyme that metabolizes membrane phospholipids. Catabolism of phospholipids at membrane–water interfaces is important both in modification of membrane structure and as a source of second messengers and other regulators. The crystal structure of the porcine pancreas phospholipase A2 reveals the catalytic triad (D99-H48-water) and the active site Ca2+ ion, liganded to a second water molecule (W2).
