Betaine-homocysteine methyltransferase

Betaine-homocysteine methyltransferase
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: Whereas the one-carbon and methyl cycles are found in virtually all cells, liver and kidney possess an additional route for methionine synthesis that involves a different kind of transmethylation.

Homocysteine can be remethylated using betaine as the methyl donor in a reaction catalyzed by the cytosolic betaine-homocysteine methyltransferase.

Betaine, also known as trimethylglycine, is formed from the mitochondrial oxidation of choline.
