Description: After a nick is made in the donor (male) chromosome, a helicase unwinds the two strands.

The nicked strand (gray) is elongated (blue) at the 3’ end, displacing the 5’ end and transferring it into the recipient (female) cell.

Later, the transferred DNA strand can undergo recombination with the recipient chromosome, thereby transferring genetic markers to the female.
