gp32 facilitation of both denaturation and renaturation of DNA
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: When only a short length of DNA is exposed, gp32 binds weakly.

The folded-down configuration of the C-terminal domain prevents cooperative binding of other gp32 molecules, and hence, strand unwinding (“breathing”).

If a longer region of ssDNA is exposed after the first gp32 molecule has bound, the C-terminal domain can shift to the “up” configuration, enlarging the DNA binding site and permitting cooperative binding of other gp32 molecules, thereby further extending the denatured region.

For simplicity binding is shown on only one of the two denatured DNA strands.
