Description: In the absence of topoisomerases, steric forces would prevent gyrase from unwinding DNA as replication forks approached each other.

Topoisomerase allows the circles to decatenate.

It is not known whether decatenation occurs before or after the completion of replication.

Both possibilities are shown here.
