Description: The RNA genome contains long terminal repeats, to one of which a tRNA molecule binds. Primer extension, partial RNA digestion, and circularization generate a substrate for extensive DNA synthesis. Ultimately, a circular duplex DNA molecule is formed, and it is the likely substrate for integration into a host chromosome. Evidence suggests that two viral RNA molecules must interact at step 2 or 3.
