Description: Uracil-DNA N-glycosylase (also called Ung) removes uracil, leaving an apyrimidinic site. A specific endonuclease recognizes this 5’ site and cleaves on the side. DNA polymerase I replaces the missing nucleotide, leaving deoxyribose-5-phosphate on the 5’ side of the nick. This is removed hydrolytically, and DNA ligase seals the nick.
