| Description: Greece, 6th–3rd century BCE. Despite meaning "antiquated," the Archaic period was a time of achievement and innovation in Greece. It was during this period that Sappho and Aesop created their literary works. Delphi was renowned as an oracle where the god Apollo was believed to communicate with humans. The Pythian Games, similar to the Olympic Games, were held at Delphi. The sanctuary of Apollo was largely developed during the Archaic period to include a main temple, performance and athletic area, and monuments.
