Description: A BRONZE FOUNDRY 490-480 BCE. Red-figure decoration on a kylix from Vulci, Italy. Ceramic, diameter of kylix 12" (31 cm). Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Preussischer Kulturbesitz, Antikensammlung. A new hollow-casting, lost-wax process technique allowed for more complex action poses in bronze. The painted Athenian kylix on the next slide shows a late Archaic foundry in which large bronze statues were being produced—evidence that such capability existed as early as the first decades of the fifth century BCE.
