| Description: c. 450-440 BCE. Marble, height 31-1/2" (80 cm). Stelai (s. stele) were used as gravestones and featured low-relief carvings of the person to be remembered. One on the next slide shows a girl in a peplos carved with extraordinary detail. A later stele commemorates a couple, presumably in a joint grave, with an air of softness and delicacy in flesh and fabric.
