Récupération El Anatsui began to study Ghanian surface design traditions as produced by Ewe and Ashanti textile artists. He created a large body of work inspired by uli, an important Igbo surface design system. He also appropriated found objects and weaved them into wall sculpture as seen in Flag for a New World Power.
