Description: Near Rome. Late 1st century BCE. Museo Nazionale Romano, Rome. In the Villa of the Mysteries at Pompeii, murals depict initiation rites into the cult of Bacchus. By using a kind of intuitive perspective, the artists have created a general impression of real space beyond the wall. The late first-century BCE paintings on the dining-room walls of Livia's villa at Primaporta, exemplify yet another approach to creating a sense of expanded space with murals. The painters used atmospheric perspective, where the world becomes progressively less distinct as it recedes into the distance.
