Description: Domitian, the last Flavian emperor, was assassinated in 96 CE and succeeded by a senator, Nerva, who designated Trajan as his successor. Under Trajan, the empire reached its greatest territorial expanse and his successor, Hadrian, consolidated the empire's borders and imposed far-reaching social, governmental, and military reforms. During Augustus' reign, he paved the city's old Republican Forum, restored its temples and basilicas, and built an Imperial Forum. These projects marked the beginning of a continuing effort to transform the capital into a magnificent monument to imperial rule.
