The function of a ligand-gated ion channel
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: In animals, ligand-gated ion channels are important in the transmission of signals between nerve and muscle cells and between two nerve cells. In addition, ligand-gated ion channels in the plasma membrane allow the uptake of Ca2+ into the cytosol. As discussed later in this chapter, changes in the cytosolic concentration of Ca2+ play an important role in many signal transduction pathways.
