Description: Placentation is the process of forming the placenta. This structure is the site of exchange of nutrients and wastes between the mother and fetus.
The placenta produces hormones used to sustain the pregnancy.

By the beginning of the 12th week, the placenta has two parts:
The fetal portion (chorionic villi)
The maternal portion (decidua basalis of the endometrium)
