Description: The 23 pairs of human chromosomes include 22 pairs of autosomes and one pair of sex chromosomes (X and Y). Males have an X and a Y chromosome. Females have two X chromosomes (one is automatically inactivated—X-chromosome inactivation—and becomes a Barr body). Whether the sperm that will fertilize an egg is carrying an X or a Y chromosome will determine the gender of the zygote. An egg will only have one X chromosome under normal circumstances.
