Description: On the Flexible Item Selection Task (FIST) children are presented with three cards with pictures of objects that vary on two of four possible dimensions. A child is required to match two cards on one dimension and then to match two cards by using a different dimension. By age 5, children can perform both tasks, which suggests that they are capable of abstraction and cognitive flexibility.
