Description: Organ systems affected by cystic fibrosis. (a) Cystic fibrosis affects both the upper respiratory tract (the nose and sinuses) and the lungs. Thick, sticky mucus clogs the bronchial tubes and the lungs, making breathing difficult. It also slows the removal of viruses and bacteria from the respiratory system, resulting in lung infections. (b) Thick mucus blocks the transport of digestive enzymes in the pancreas. The lack of digestive enzymes results in poor nutrition and slow growth. The trapped digestive enzymes gradually break down the pancreas into a fibrous structure.
