Description: Distribution of dystrophin in muscle cells. (a) In normal muscle cells, all the dystrophin is located in the plasma membrane, and the cytoplasm looks dark. (b) In muscle cells of a boy with DMD, there is no dystrophin in the plasma membranes (so the membranes are invisible), and defective copies of the dystrophin molecules accumulate in the cytoplasm, which stains a light blue. When dystrophin is not present in the cell membrane, muscle contractions eventually tear the membrane and the cell dies.
