Description: Some of the common structural abnormalities seen in chromosomes. (a) In a deletion, part of a chromosome is lost (here segment F is lost). (b) Duplications have a chromosomal segment repeated (here segment DE is duplicated). (c) In a translocation, parts are exchanged between chromosomes. In this example, segments of nonhomologous chromosomes are exchanged. (d) In an inversion, the order of chromosome segments is reversed (here segment EFG is inverted).
