Description: Scanning electron micrographs of (a) normal red blood cells and (b) sickled red blood cells. As shown above the micrographs, a missense mutation in the ?-globin gene (which codes for a subunit of hemoglobin) changes the sixth amino acid in the ?-globin polypeptide from a glutamic acid to a valine. (c) This micrograph shows how this alteration to the structure of ?-globin causes the formation of abnormal fibrelike structures. In normal cells, hemoglobin proteins do not form fibres.
