Description: (a) Metaphase is a step during mitosis when the chromosomes are highly compacted. This TEM shows a metaphase chromosome that exists in a form called a pair of sister chromatids. (b) A schematic drawing of sister chromatids. This structure has two chromatids that lie side by side. The two chromatids are held together by proteins called cohesins (not shown in the drawing). The kinetochore is a group of proteins that bind the centromeres and play a role during chromosome segregation.
