Description: 1 The seed coat splits and the radicle emerges. 2 As the hypocotyl emerges from the seed, it bends in the shape of a hook. 3 The stem lengthens, and the bent hypocotyl drags the two cotyledons upward toward the surface of the soil. 4 Exposure to sunlight causes the hypocotyl to straighten. 5 Primary leaves emerge from between the cotyledons as the stem straightens. 6 The cotyledons wither as the seedling’s leaves begin to produce food by photosyn-thesis. Eventually, they fall off the stem. Picture Stats: Views: 91 Filesize: 729.8kB Height: 656 Width: 1736 Source: https://biology-forums.com/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=47868 |
