Erosion Due to Poor Farming Practices
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: Runaway erosion in Providence Canyon, Georgia, a result of poor farming practices combined with soft soil. Settlers who arrived in the area around 1800 plowed the land straight up and down the hills. The furrows made excellent conduits for rainwater, which proceeded to carve out deep crevices that made even better rainwater conduits. The area became useless for farming by 1850. It now consists of about 445 hectares (1,100 acres) of deep canyons that continue to expand at the rate of about 2 meters (6 feet) per year.
