Primary growth in a shoot
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: New tissues arise by divisions of undifferentiated cells in shoot apical meristem. Some of the dividing cells are pushed to the periphery of the apical meristem, where they begin to differentiate as proto-derm, procambium, and ground meristem. Cells in these primary meristem tissues divide and fully differentiate into dermal, vascular, and ground tissues, respectively. Regions of mitosis, differentiation, and cell enlargement are indicated.
