An example of an allosteric effect

An example of an allosteric effect
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: (a) Pyruvate kinase is an enzyme that consists of four identical polypeptide chains. Each chain has an active site and a binding site for a regulatory molecule. (b) When regulatory molecules (red) bind to the allosteric sites, the overall shape of the enzyme changes. The change makes the enzyme functional. Here, substrate molecules ( yellow) are bound to the active sites. Small green balls are magnesium ions.
