Components of the transactional nature of stress
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: In transactional models of stress, dispositional aspects influence the individual’s response to an internal or external event. Such dispositional aspects include personality and physical health. An event that is perceived as life threatening is processed immediately in a manner akin to stimulus–response processing. Events that are not perceived as life threatening result in a degree of cognitive dissonance or discomfort and undergo a degree of cognitive interpretation before the development of stress. The initial stress response depends on the coping resources available to the individual; in turn, the presence of coping resources influences health outcome. However, stress of sufficient intensity can immediately influence health outcome without the mediation of coping.

Located at the top of the chart, even flows to appraisal. To the left, personality also flows to appraisal and down to coping. Appraisal flows to both positive interpretation and threat or uncertainty. Threat or uncertainty flows to coping and stress. Coping flows back to threat or uncertainty and stress. Positive interpretation flows to stress, stress response, and the last box, which is health. Stress flows back to coping and down to stress response, which flows to health. Health is connected back up to threat or uncertainty.
