Description: Several parts of the brain are involved in the interpretation of stress and responses on the part of the individual. The frontal lobes are involved in personality regulation and response interpretation, sending signals to other parts of the brain such as the thalamus and hypothalamus. The amygdala plays a role in the regulation of emotion and regulates fear and anxiety. The hypothalamus releases hormonal mediators that have end effects on other organs, such as the adrenals. The pons is part of the brainstem and influences sleep, as does the reticular activating system.

The diagram is of a person’s profile when facing to the left. The frontal lobes in the top left part of the brain regulate personality, regulate response interpretation, and send signals to other parts of the brain. The thalamus in the center of the brain relays and processes sensory information. The hypothalamus below the thalamus releases hormonal mediators. The amygdala below the hypothalamus regulates emotion, fear, and anxiety. The pons just above the spine influences sleep.
