Description: Individual predisposing factors exist in the person’s daily life but usually cause no problems. When a precipitating factor occurs, such as an unusual stress, the person will experience insomnia that will continue at varying levels for a few weeks and then disappear. However, if the individual experiences any perpetuating factors, such as anxiety related to poor sleep, after about 4 weeks the insomnia may become chronic, and it may last for years. A horizontal line is labeled insomnia threshold. Predisposing factors such as hyperarousal and worrying reach from the horizontal axis up about halfway to the threshold line. Precipitating factors, such as loss of job, death in family, and life stress push the curve above the line initially. Perpetuating factors such as poor coping skills and poor sleep habits keep the curve above the threshold line.
