Concepts related to alterations in fluids and electrolytes
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: In the center of the map is fluid and electrolyte balance. This extends to 5 other concepts, which each extend to further concepts, as follows. 1. Elimination, which extends to constipation, nausea and vomiting, and oliguria. 2. Mood and affect, which extends to cognitive issues, confusion and tetany, and apathy. 3. Intracranial regulation, which extends to lethargy, stupor, seizures, and coma. 4. Perfusion, which extends to cardiac dysrhythmias, shock, tachycardia, hypertension and hypotension, and edema. 5. Acid base balance, which extends to 4 things.

1. Metabolic acidosis, which causes. increased H plus concentration or decreases H C O sub 3 negative, a kidney response of retaining H C O sub 3 negative, and a respiratory response of hyperventilation. 2. Respiratory acidosis, which is caused by increased C O 2, hypoventilation, C N S depression, abdominal distention, et cetera, and causes a kidney response of increasing production of H C O sub 3 negative or acid excretion in urine, and a respiratory response of increasing C O 2. 3. Respiratory alkalosis, which causes hyperventilation and decreased C O 2, anxiety, overventilation, H F, P E, and pneumonia, a kidney response of decreased acid excretion in urine and decreased manufacturing of H C O sub 3 negative, and a respiratory response of decreased C O 2. 4. Metabolic alkalosis, which causes decreased H plus concentration or increased H C O sub 3 negative, a kidney response of excreting H C O sub 3 negative or conversing H plus, and a respiratory response of hyperventilation or hypoventilation.
