Description: Newborns, infants, and children have a high percentage of body weight composed of water, especially ECF. A newborn’s body is 75 percent total body water, of which 45 percent is E C F and 30 percent is I C F. The brain and skin occupy a greater proportion of body weight and are high in interstitial fluid. An infant’s body is 65 percent total body water, of which 25 percent is E C F and 30 to 40 percent is I C F. A high B S A promotes fluid loss and little fluid reserves in intracellular fluid. There is a 5 to 6 times greater fluid exchange daily and a high metabolic rate requires generous fluid intake. A child or adolescent’s body is 50 total body water, of which 10 to 15 percent is E C F and 40 percent is I C F. Kidneys are immature until 2 years and unable to conserve water and electrolytes or fully assist in acid base balance.
