Depiction of cell transformations in isotonic, hypertonic, and hypotonic solutions
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: Figure A shows an isotonic solution, in which the solution has the same osmolality as body fluids, and H 2 O goes in and out of the cells. 2 cells are transformed into 2 identical cells. Figure B shows a hypertonic solution, in which there is a higher osmolality than body fluids, and H 2 O only goes out of the cell. 2 cells are transformed into 2 shriveled cells. Figure C shows a hypotonic solution, in which the there is a lower osmolality than body fluids and water only flows into the cells. 2 cells are transformed into larger, bulging cells, which burst.
