Description: Normal physiologic mechanisms of the body that restore homeostasis to the balance of serum calcium. When there is hypocalcemia, or low blood calcium levels, the parathyroid glands release P T H, which is absorbed by bone, the kidney, and intestines. In bone, P T H activates osteoclasts; calcium and phosphorous are released into the blood. In the kidney, P T H causes increased calcium absorption, more phosphate to be excreted, and the activation of vitamin D, which is absorbed by the intestine. In the intestine, P T H and vitamin D caused increased calcium uptake by intestinal mucosa. All of these things result in blood calcium levels rising.
