The pH scale and relationship between bicarbonate and carbonic acid
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: The pH scale and relationship between bicarbonate and carbonic acid. As long as the ratio of the base bicarbonate (HCO3–) to carbonic acid (H2CO3) is 20:1, the pH of arterial blood will be in the normal range of 7.35–7.45.

On the left side of the scale is 1 molecule of carbonic acid and one the right is 20 molecules of base bicarbonate. The scale is balanced at a normal p H. The p H scale from left to right is. death from the left to 6.8, acidosis from 6.8 to 7.35, normal from 7.35 to 7.45, alkalosis from 7.45 to 8.0, and death from 8.0 to the right.
