Mechanisms involved in production of metabolic alkalosis due to loss of gastric fluid
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: Six stages are involved in the production of metabolic alkalosis due to loss of gastric fluid. 1. Vomiting causes a loss of gastric fluid from the stomach. 2. This causes low chloride in the stomach. 3. Chloride moves from interstitial fluid in the stomach to gastric secretions. 4. Chloride shifts from plasma to interstitial fluid. 5. Bicarbonate moves out of erythrocyte in the blood to place lost chloride. 6. Increased bicarbonate in the blood leads to alkalosis.
