Description: The primary function of the cell membrane is to act as a semipermeable structure that separates the intracellular and extracellular environments. In the cell membrane, the closest part to the interior of the cell is the intracellular face of the membrane. Inside the cell is the intracellular fluid. Along this inner membrane are long string-like proteins of cytoskeleton. Peripheral proteins are small and round and are between the strings. The extracellular face of the membrane faces is the outer part of the membrane. Along this edge are small round glycolipids, which have long skinny tails. Between the two parts of the membrane and channels, which are long and hollow, cholesterol, which are small and hexagonal, and glycoproteins, which are large and oblong and space from intra to extra cellular. Coming off of the glycoproteins are strings of hexagonal figures called carbohydrate chains.
