Description: In atrophy, the cell sizes decrease. In hypertrophy, the cell size increases. In hyperplasia, the number of cells increases. In metaplasia, one type of cell converts to another. In dysplasia, the cell growth is disorderly.

In normal cells, all cells are roughly the same size. In atrophy, the cells all shrink to roughly the same size. In hypertrophy, the cells all get bigger to roughly the same size. In hyperplasia, the cells are all more squished together and there are more of them. In metaplasia, some cells shrink while others stay the same. In dysplasia, some cells stay the same, but the others get much smaller and multiply and become oddly shaped.
