Description: Schematic illustration of the morphologic changes in cell injury culminating in A necrosis or B apoptosis. ER = endoplasmic reticulum. Alt Text: Diagram A shows necrosis. A normal cell undergoes reversible injury, which myelin figures and membrane blebs appear and E R and mitochondria swell. This can result in recovery or progressive injury, in which inflammation occurs, plasma membrane, organelles, and the nucleus break down and the contents leak. This leads to necrosis. Diagram B shows apoptosis. A normal cell undergoes injury in which membrane blebs occurs and chromatin condenses. This leads to cellular fragmentation and apoptotic bodies to separate from the cell, which is apoptosis. This leads to the cell becoming unrecognizable, or the phagocytosis of apoptotic cells and fragments.
