Inflammation (innate and adaptive immunity)
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: Inflammation is a complex, tightly regulated process that encompasses both innate and acquired, or adaptive, immunity.

The process starts with exposure to antigen, which hits physical barriers, such as fluids like tears, saliva, mucus, and gastric acid, and skin and mucous membranes, but also leads to inflammation, toll-like receptors, inflammatory mediators, antimicrobial peptides, and phagocytosis. This, along with the physical barriers, are the body’s innate immunity. Exposure also leads to acquired immune response, which is adaptive immunity. Finally, if all defenses are overcome, injury or death ensues.
