Description: In many cases, the amount of protein encoded by a single dominant allele is sufficient to produce the normal phenotype. In this example, the normal phenotype is purple flower colour in a pea plant. The normal allele (P) encodes protein P, an enzyme needed for the synthesis of purple pigment. A plant with one or two copies of the normal allele produces enough pigment to produce purple flowers. In a pp homozygote, the complete lack of the normal protein results in white flowers.
